#340lbs

Weight loss begins now. I am 49, a mother of 3, an executive and weigh 340lbs.  I was a former athlete. I was diagnosed with a Chiari Malformation and had brain surgery in 2006. I adopted 3 children, all siblings in 2008.  I have had 3 more surgeries.  I am spiritual, involved with church and volunteer when I can, love photography, yet … I weigh 340lbs. Family photos are fun. I am always the photographer (by choice). Vacations used to be fun, now I hate going to the beach or the pool and swimming was my sport.  Now, let’s flip to work. I am confident, driven and great at what I do, yet … I weigh 340lbs drumroll please ....  my insurance company does not have any surgical or non-surgical weight loss plans.  I can't even take advantage of the nutritional programs or proceed to my referral at the bariatric facility nearby.  Can you feel my tears running down my cheeks?

God brought me to this inspiring woman named Amy Pedersen, CEO of Slimpressions. I fell in love with her story and loved seeing the website.  There is such a great group of people here … much like a family.  Looking at the products, I thought, “Yeah right, how am I going to fit into these?”  I wanted to order one online, but didn’t. What was I afraid of? What is the worst thing that could happen? It doesn’t fit and you send it back with their no hassle guarantee return policy. Then the emotions kick in, depression because you are too big yet … “you have such a beautiful face”, “you have a great heart”, “you are an amazing person” … YES BUT I AM FAT … I weigh 340lbs!
#suprisecomfybralette
Amy surprised me one day with a little brown bag.  Inside it was a Comfy Bralette. I took it home and tried it on and was so excited. It fit perfect.  It was soft, comfortable, supported me in all the right places and gave me so much confidence.  I was shocked … and yet I weigh 340lbs. Real shapewear for Real women! I get it. #Ibelieve I have very dear friend who has lost 180+ lbs. She has been such an inspiration to me personally and professionally.  My family, friends, Amy and Slimpressions are behind me.  What am I waiting for? So I started my diet 4/9/2016 because I am 340lbs. Not just because I failed my first physical ever and my doctor said I had to, but because I need this.  I drove to my prayer group at church last night and as I sat in silence, tears just fell. One by one, like a child slowly turning on a faucet. Soon, I simply lost control of all my emotions and felt naked in my skin bearing my soul in silence to God as he said, “Be Bold. Be Brave.” I opened up to my group and shared my struggle.  They prayed over me and I found continued strength through their healing words.

I don’t weigh 340lbs. Today I weigh 330lbs.  I have a weight loss of  10lbs in 10 days. This is the first post (of many) you will see of my weight loss journey. My first weight loss goal is 50x50. 50lbs by age 50 which will be coming up at the end of September. Slimpressions is not just a company with products on their website.  They care about OUR journey and are here to cheer us on.  The journey can be weight loss, career driven, family extension, inner healing, or retirement. As a community we all support on another and what better place than to let Slimpressions into your life, like I did mine.  #bebold  #bebrave Please "LIKE THIS" or SHARE so I know you are out there supporting my weight loss journey. I will keep writing, posting and sending prayers and blessings your way.   Dawn  04/19/2016 IMG_4483-e1462242488300

The Shapewear Evolution

As with many industries, the shapewear business has evolved.  Bye, bye girdles!  (And thank goodness!)  The denim industry, for example, began in the 18th century with a need for a durable fabric for laborers. In the 19th century, Levi Strauss began a wholesale business, answering the need for strong clothes for gold miners. The denim industry has expanded over the years into a staple for westerners, rebels, hippies and fashionistas. Hundreds of companies have launched and succeeded as a result. ‘The old mass market has segmented, fragmented, shattered into a multitude of mini, micro and niche markets’* and the same thing has happened in shapewear.  Gone are the days of the girdle and gone are the days of only one shapewear company.  ...
Today's woman longs for more.
Many shapewear companies focus their designs and marketing efforts on the special occasion. Whether it’s a wedding, reunion or red carpet event, these shapers were designed for women with just a few pounds to hide knowing they will only be worn for a few hours.  There's certainly a need there.

Often referred to as “Real Shapewear for Real Women”, Slimpressions is for women who have lost/need to lose fifteen pounds or more and would like an all-day solution to camouflage their "extra".   That's right Barbie...Slimpressions is NOT for you.

At Slimpressions, we focus on looking good and feeling good every day.  We treat every day as a special occassion and believe that women have the right to shine Monday through Sunday, not just on Saturday nights.  Our shapewear features moderate compression so you can BREATHE and still look good and feel confident all day, every day.

What makes our designs so comfortable? We use a patented technology to create a seamless torso. Unlike traditional “cut and sew” compression garments that force every body regardless of their shape into a consistent mold/pattern, our seamless designs conform to EVERY body shape and style. So whether you’re a woman with an hour glass, pear, apple, spoon, etc. body style, Slimpressions confidencewear works for you. (We don’t subscribe to the “stuffing a round peg into a square hole” approach. We think too highly of things like oxygen.)  Further, our body shapers are longer than traditional shapewear styles. They were designed to sit on the hips to work with the woman’s body to stay in place and minimize untimely roll-ups common in other brands.

Just as women have a variety of jeans in their closets, women now have a variety of body slimming solutions to choose from.  Shapewear is like jewelry, as I always say.  Not every piece works with every outfit...or for every occasion.  Treat yourself to Slimpressions when you want to look and feel your best whether your going to the grocery store or presenting the quarterly report.  Confidencewear, indeed.

21 Ways to Love Your Body

I had the honor and privilege of co-hosting Diva Taunia's radio program last night.  The topic was about body image and self-esteem....something I'm passionate about.  Why?  I too have had challenges loving myself for who I was starting as a child.  (I'll save that for a future blog.) The reality is our company was inspired by a very embarassing moment for me...all because of my own body issues.  I was waving to a friend one day as we dropped our kids off at preschool.  She's a great gal (despite the fact she has ZERO body fat on her.) :)  Although I had stopped waving my hand, my arm kept on jiggling.  Now, I knew I had bat wings but for the first time, I saw that someone else spotted that dreaded wiggle.  I called my sister-in-la...
I called my sister-in-law and now business partner, Jennifer Daniels, and we laughed about the whole thing. Our search online for an arm slimmer was fruitless and the idea for Slimpressions was born. Occassionally, someone will ask "YOU wear Slimpressions too?"  Of course I do!  In fact, those that ask that question have never seen me not wearing Slimpressions!  I practice what I preach.  I wear them every day to look better in my clothes and help me feel more confident.  As much as I love sharing the line with others, I laughingly say it's really all for me.  :) Body image issues can be a challenging thing.  One resource that Taunia shared on air was called "20 Ways to Love Your Body" by Margo Maine, PhD; a resource from NationalEatingDisorders.org.  I loved this and wanted to share.
1. Think of your body as the vehicle to your dreams. Honor it. Respect it. Fuel it. 2. Create a list of all the things your body lets you do. Read it and add to it often. 3. Become aware of what your body can do each day. Remember it is the instrument of your life, not just an ornament. 4. Create a list of people you admire: people who have contributed to your life, your community, or the world. Consider whether their appearance was important to their success and accomplishments. 5. Walk with your head held high, supported by pride and confidence in yourself as a person. 6. Don’t let your weight or shape keep you from activities that you enjoy. 7. Wear comfortable clothes that you like, that express your personal style, and that feel good to your body. 8. Count your blessings, not your blemishes. 9. Think about all the things you could accomplish with the time and energy you currently spend worrying about your body and appearance. Try one! 10. Be your body’s friend and supporter, not its enemy. 11. Consider this: your skin replaces itself once a month, your stomach lining every five days, your liver every six weeks, and your skeleton every three months. Your body is extraordinary--begin to respect and appreciate it. 12. Every morning when you wake up, thank your body for resting and rejuvenating itself so you can enjoy the day. 13. Every evening when you go to bed, tell your body how much you appreciate what it has allowed you to do throughout the day. 14. Find a method of exercise that you enjoy and do it regularly. Don’t exercise to lose weight or to fight your body. Do it to make your body healthy and strong and because it makes you feel good. Exercise for the Three F’s: Fun, Fitness, and Friendship. 15. Think back to a time in your life when you felt good about your body. Tell yourself you can feel like that again, even in this body at this age. 16. Keep a list of 10 positive things about yourself--without mentioning your appearance. Add to it! 17. Put a sign on each of your mirrors saying, “I’m beautiful inside and out.” 18. Choose to find the beauty in the world and in yourself. 19. Start saying to yourself, “Life is too short to waste my time hating my body this way.” 20. Eat when you are hungry. Rest when you are tired. Surround yourself with people that remind you of your inner strength and beauty.
I think this is amazing advice and I'd like to add one more. 21. Wear Slimpressions every day to look and feel your best.  Women don't call Slimpressions "confidencewear" for nothing.  :) Here's to loving your body and having a healthy self-image!
